Background of the Study

Political godfatherism is a dominant feature in Nigeria’s political landscape, where influential individuals, known as "godfathers," use their power and resources to control electoral processes, candidates, and governance structures (Ogunyemi & Bala, 2023). This practice often leads to electoral violence, as political aspirants and their supporters engage in clashes to secure the favor of powerful political patrons.

In Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, political godfatherism has significantly influenced election outcomes, with reports of voter intimidation, rigging, and violent confrontations among rival factions (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). The manipulation of electoral processes by godfathers undermines democracy and contributes to political instability in the region.

Despite efforts by electoral bodies and security agencies to curb electoral violence, the influence of political godfathers continues to pose a serious threat to free and fair elections. This study seeks to examine the impact of political godfatherism on electoral violence in Nasarawa LGA and explore possible solutions to mitigate its negative effects.

Statement of the Problem

The phenomenon of political godfatherism has been a major factor in Nigeria’s electoral crises, fostering a culture of impunity, vote-buying, and violent confrontations. In Nasarawa LGA, political actors backed by influential godfathers often engage in violent tactics to secure power, leading to disruption of electoral processes and disenfranchisement of voters (Bala & Usman, 2023).

The persistent cycle of electoral violence discourages political participation, weakens democratic institutions, and erodes public trust in the electoral system. Although various reforms have been introduced to improve electoral integrity, the deep-rooted influence of political godfathers remains a challenge. There is a need to critically assess how political godfatherism contributes to electoral violence and propose measures to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic framework.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the relationship between political godfatherism and electoral violence in Nasarawa LGA.

  2. To assess the impact of political godfathers on electoral processes and voter behavior.

  3. To suggest strategies for reducing the influence of political godfatherism in elections.

Research Questions

  1. How does political godfatherism contribute to electoral violence in Nasarawa LGA?

  2. What impact do political godfathers have on electoral processes and voter participation?

  3. What measures can be adopted to mitigate the influence of political godfatherism in elections?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Political godfatherism significantly contributes to electoral violence in Nasarawa LGA.

  2. The activities of political godfathers negatively affect electoral processes and voter behavior.

  3. Strengthening electoral laws and enforcement mechanisms can reduce the influence of political godfatherism.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on Nasarawa LGA in Kano State and analyze electoral violence from 2011 to 2025. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining firsthand accounts from political actors and security risks associated with studying politically sensitive issues.

Definitions of Terms
